Motivating and mentoring graduates: The University of the West of Scotland Employer Mentoring Programme

Published: 15 November 2023

Brian McFerran has recently been involved in the Employer Mentoring Programme at the University of the West of Scotland. The programme helps students to develop their employability skills and industry knowledge by gaining the support of industry professionals.

Lynsey McMahon, Projects Officer & Employer Liaison at the UWS Employer Mentoring Programme said:

“Mentors support students to build confidence and prepare for graduate employment, inspiring and empowering students to succeed. Mentorship is invaluable for our students to build professional networks and learn from experienced professionals in the sector.

Our industry partners play a significant role in helping students make informed decisions about future career pathways. Mentors gain many personal and professional benefits including the satisfaction of contributing to their mentee’s growth, enhancing leadership skills, strengthening knowledge and gaining new perspectives.

BioAscent industry mentors share a wealth of knowledge and experience with UWS students considering a career in integrated drug discovery services.”

Brian McFerran, Associate Director of Biosciences at BioAscent said:

“Having participated in the scheme as a mentor, I found it personally very rewarding to be able to work one-to-one with a student over an extended period of time and play a part in their personal development.

As well as building links with the local academic community, it also presents a great opportunity for BioAscent as an employer to understand the challenges that soon-to-be graduates face in the job market, and to consider how we can best support them through the early years of a career in science.”

BioAscent is a growing integrated drug discovery contract research organisation based near Glasgow. Find out more about career opportunities at BioAscent here.
